Well, this is a first for me and frankly I’m using this blog as somewhat of an experiment.

I’ve created a digital home entertainment site (www.moviesforu.ca) focused entirely on Canadian consumers as I personally feel we’re under served in the marketplace, in terms of being able to gain access to purely Canadian content.

With a reasonably young, kind of large family here at home, getting out to the movies weekly has become an incredibly expensive proposition. With admission, popcorn and drinks, we’re now out $ 75.00 minimum to watch a movie. With a three (3) year old in tow who is a bouncy, bubbly ball of activity, sitting through a movie can be next to impossible. So there has been more than one (1) occasion, where I’ve started to watch the movie, but wound-up out of the theatre, entertaining the youngest member of our tribe.

Besides, with an age span from the oldest a twelve (12) year old into more artsy flicks, to a ten (10) year old jock who eats, breathes, sleeps snow-boarding and hockey to a seven (7) year old going through her Barbie phase, trying to get everyone to agree on what movie becomes a negotiation worthy of any boardroom in the country.

So the option became entertaining the family by watching movies at home. This way different constituent groups could watch different movies, play video games on different TVs in different parts of the house. Sounds simple right?
Well, when I first decided to go down this road, there was little if no information on the internet to help me out. Even more recently, while information has become far more available, information specific to the Canadian context is incredibly difficult to find.

Even as recently as the last several weeks, as I was pulling together some research for my new website, virtually all of the sites I visited, provided information in an American context only. Not to say that the information wasn’t valid, however in many instances it only peripherally applied to what I was looking for. So I decided why not, let’s give it a shot and see where the journey takes me.

So here we are, the first post on a new blog that I hope will provide value to those who decide to join me on the journey. I’m going to focus, this actual blog on digital home entertainment news for Canadians. I’d like to dive in to help the reader truly understand what the news item means to them here in Canada and how they can then use that information to maximize their digital home entertainment dollar.

The new website www.moviesforu.ca, will also have content on home entertainment technology reviews, technology background information and hopefully a business directory of companies Canadians can trust and turn for in-home help and installation.

Believe it or not, I’m also going to take a crack at some movie reviews as well. I’m definitely not a Siskel or Ebert, but I’ve been told I absolutely have an opinion. Like with many other sites, I will try to include some information on the latest and greatest current releases. But the real focus of the movie reviews will be in three (3) areas.

  • The first area will be family focused movies from the Disney classics over the years to current day offerings. With four (4) wonderful kids twelve (12) through to four (4) we can get a somewhat divergent mix of movie watching happening in the household. So I’m going to try and cover as many of these movies as I can.

  • The second area is absolutely my personal favourite. I’m going to look at true “Cult” Classics along with the really terrible “B” Movies from the 50s, 60 and even into the 70s. I love these flicks as they tend to be some of the funniest moves you’ll ever watch. Movies like the “Plan 9 from Outer Space” the Ed Wood Jr. uber classic, to “The Terror of Tiny Town” along with many of the Sci-Fi Classics of the era like “It Came From Outer Space”.

  • The third focus will be on truly classic “war” movies over movie history. I know that really doesn’t mix with the family theme, so we’ll definitely be keeping those reviews separate. But there has been some tremendous work done over the years in this genre and I’ve always found these films to be an amazing reflection of the social attitudes of the period. So I’m going to try and review each of these films from the context of the prevailing attitude of the times to see what parallels can be drawn. Nothing incredibly high brow, but hopefully some folks will find it interesting.

So all-in-all an eclectic mix of information will be available to anyone who visits the website. I hope to keep things lively and entertaining and more than just a little collaborative. So if you’d like to chime in with your two cents, we’re happy to have you.
